Breast ptosis is a very common condition and usually unavoidable due to various factors such as aging, gravity, pregnancy, breastfeeding, extreme weight loss. Breast uplift also known as Mastopexy is the procedure where excess breast skin removal and tightening of the underlying tissues is performed , giving the breast a more youthful appearance. This operation improves the shape and position of the breast keeping at the same time the actual volume of the breast intact.
This is achieved by restoring the breast to its original position and repositioning the tissues at the same time in order to fulfill the upper breast pole.
Furthermore, the position of the nipple and any pre existing asymmetries are corrected. The operation is performed under general anesthesia , usually as a day case or an overnight stay. For 4 weeks it is advisable to avoid physical activity. After 6 months to 1 year the scars are usually minimally visible.
The surgery lasts 2-3 hours under general anesthesia.
The incisions are made either around the areola or with a vertical extension or inverted T-shaped to move the nipple and the areola to a higher position. An ´ internal bra ` technique using deeper stitches is used to keep the breast in its new position and very fine superficial sutures to the skin.
After 10-14 days the stitches are removed and the patient can return to work normally. For a month she wears a special bra, which she only removes in the bathroom. Swellings and bruises decease just in a few days.
